‘I was first introduced to the colouring of titanium by Ann Marie Shillito in 1978, when we were both teaching at Manchester Polytechnic. I had been using chain-mail elements in my jewellery for some years before that, and had already experimented with combinations of different coloured metals within the ‘weave’, so the possibilities for broadening the range of available colours were immediately obvious. After spending some time refining my methods of making coloured links, I explored the possibilities until about 1982, when the time consuming nature of chain-mail became incompatible with full-time teaching.'
